Group HIM has been based in 1991 in Helsinki by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko Lindstrom and bass player Mikko Paananen. Initially the ensemble executed covers-versions of songs Black Sabbath and KISS, favorite bands of Valo. The name of group and an abbreviation have been partly inspired by hearings (obviously false) that Kiss is deciphered as Knights In Satan Service. In the first years in group there were changes of structure for the period of military service of its participants, but three founders remain in it to this day.
In the mid-nineties Valo has started to compose own material for group. Records of first demo-disk Witches and Other Night Fears hasn't remained. The first authentically known release of group was minialbum This is Only the Beginning, left in 1995. On this disk the group didn't have a drummer, Valo wrote down parties shock itself. The group has sent a demo on a label bmg and has received the contract on an album. Has been at first published demoalbum 666 Ways to Love: Prologue, and then, in 1997 debut album Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666. On all three albums, in particular, has entered a cover-version of a song of Chris Isaac Wicked Game, executed by group in rock processing. This song and the clip removed on it have brought to group wide popularity.
From the very beginning the group has selected style of melodious fate with texts about love and death. In image made advances to subjects it is ready, having achieved in their environment of some popularity, despite genre differences though the relation to it remains ambiguous. The group name together with causing image of Valo shocked public, and according to the advice of producers, since the second album the group used abbreviation H.
